Counterfeit concert tickets are not a theoretical problem in Tanzania. They are a documented, recurring one. Digital ticketing via WhatsApp screenshots has made it trivially easy to forward a valid-looking ticket image to multiple people. Printed tickets can be photocopied with a phone camera and a decent printer. In both cases, if the entry check is a visual inspection of a paper ticket or a phone screen, the forgery holds up long enough to get through the door. The promoter discovers the problem only at reconciliation: more people inside the venue than tickets sold.
A wristband system eliminates this problem entirely. Each physical wristband — whether a Tyvek band with a serial number or an RFID-chipped credential — is issued once, applied once, and checked against a list. The same ticket cannot be used to issue two wristbands. And once a person is inside wearing a wristband, no scan, no image and no printed ticket elsewhere can grant a second person the same credential.
The Throughput Problem: Solving the Queue
Concerts in Dar es Salaam routinely see their worst reviews about the entry experience rather than the performance itself. Beyond general admission, every concert has a backstage and artist hospitality area that needs controlled access. The typical rider requirement from a Tanzanian concert artist includes a defined number of backstage passes. These are most professionally fulfilled with fabric or plastic wristbands in a distinct colour that door staff at the backstage entrance are briefed to recognise. Colour-coded backstage wristbands also prevent the common scenario where a general admission guest attempts to talk their way backstage — the physical credential is either present or it is not.
Numbered Wristbands for Accountability
For high-value concerts where the ticket price justifies more sophisticated access control, numbered wristbands — where each band carries a unique printed serial number — allow a second layer of verification. The wristband number is recorded against the guest's ticket number or name at issuance. Any wristband that cannot be traced back to a legitimate issuance is immediately suspect.
