The glow stick was invented in 1965 by a chemist named Edwin Chandross at Bell Labs. It was first used by the US Navy as a silent, waterproof light source for divers. By the 1990s it had migrated to music festivals. By the 2000s, it was a staple of New Year's Eve celebrations on every continent. Sixty years after its invention, a glow stick still sells out across Tanzania every December. There is a lesson in that longevity: some products work so simply and so well that no amount of technological advancement can make them obsolete.
Uliza Events stocks glow sticks in three sizes: 4 inch, 6 inch and 12 inch. Each size has its own use case, and understanding the differences helps event operators order the right product rather than assuming they are interchangeable.
Choosing the Right Size
The 4-inch glow stick is the compact version — bright, cheap and ideal for children's events, party bags and large-scale distribution where cost per unit matters most. At TZS 8 per piece at Uliza Events bulk pricing, a thousand 4-inch sticks for a kids' New Year's party costs TZS 8,000 — about the same as a modest birthday cake, but distributed to 1,000 children. The 6-inch stick is the classic format: the right length to hold comfortably, bright enough for a concert venue and versatile enough for almost any event application. This is the stock item most event operators default to when the specification does not specify. The 12-inch stick is the showpiece — its size makes it visible from a considerable distance and it glows with noticeably more intensity than the smaller sizes. It is the choice for outdoor events where ambient light dilutes the glow effect, or for VIP areas where you want to distinguish the glow products visually.
Why December Always Sells Out
Tanzania's festive season from mid-December through New Year is the single highest-demand period for glow sticks in the calendar. The reason is straightforward: New Year's Eve is celebrated primarily at night, outdoors, and at large gatherings. The countdown moment — when the clock strikes midnight and the crowd erupts — is dramatically enhanced when every person is holding a glowing stick. Promoters who have run New Year's events know this instinctively, and the best ones order their glow sticks in October or November. The operators who wait until mid-December often find that stock is depleted. We strongly recommend advance ordering for any festive-season event.
Creative Uses Beyond the Obvious
Beyond the classic "hold them in the air" use case, glow sticks serve several creative functions at events. They can be inserted into balloons before inflation for glowing balloon decorations. They can be taped to water bottles to create glowing table centrepieces. They can be connected end-to-end using connector caps to form circles (glow necklaces, essentially) or used as glowing batons for parade events. At outdoor movie screenings, issuing glow sticks to the audience creates a magical ambient lighting effect without interfering with the screen. The product is more versatile than it first appears.
